Perspectives, views and measuring sticks

Three words that sound like synonyms. For us they mean three different things. And it is by keeping them apart that we can stand behind what we never compromise on. The measuring sticks are never merged into one number.

Talk long enough about a portfolio and the words slide. A perspective becomes a view becomes a measuring stick. In everyday talk it doesn't matter. In a decision tool it matters a lot. If everything is a measuring stick, the word means nothing.

So we keep three words apart. Not pedantry, but the difference between describing a portfolio and assessing it.

The three measuring sticks are never merged into one number. It is not a technical detail, it is a stance. Merge them and the very trade-off leadership exists to make disappears.

Why the category isn't a measuring stick

A common way to describe initiatives is maintain, improve and shift. Are we keeping the lights on, improving what we have, or moving somewhere new? Useful, and Priopti has it. But it is a view, not a measuring stick.

The category says what kind of initiative it is, not how good it is. If we made it a fourth measuring stick we would count the same thing twice, because "moves us forward" often already weighs into the decision criteria. As descriptive, it shows whether the mix is sound, without pretending to be a judgement.

Why the words matter

Easy to dismiss as splitting hairs. But the vocabulary is what protects the one sentence that means something. The measuring sticks are never merged.

If "measuring stick" can mean any perspective or any view, the claim becomes a platitude. "We have many ways to look." True, and forgotten in the same breath. But "we measure against exactly three measuring sticks, and refuse to merge them into one number" is something a reviewer can scrutinise and leadership can lean on. A promise, not a truism.

Perspectives and views shift your gaze. The measuring sticks measure. But none passes judgement, you do. The tool makes the trade-off visible from three angles without merging them, and leaves the decision where it belongs. With you.
